Nyilpir Spider Snell was born circa 1930 at Yurramaral, on the Canning Stock Route in the Great Sandy Desert and passed away in November 2016 in Fitzroy Crossing. Spider was an elder, dancer and visual artist. As a young man, he worked as a stockman on Christmas Creek Station. As a key custodian, Spider communicated with his ancestors through Kurtal, the Snake Spirit, who lives in a sacred water-hole.

In 1997, Mr Snell was awarded an Australia Council Dance Fund Fellowship, while in 2004 he won the painting award in the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award.
