Mavis was born circa 1950 at New Haven, in the central desert region of Australia. She is the sister of Ronnie Tjampitjinpa. Mavis moved to Haasts Bluff as a teenager with her mother. When she married, she moved to Mt Liebig with her husband and began to paint at the art centre there. Mavis returned to Haasts Bluff at the death of her husband, later moving to Papyunya. Mavis paints the ceremonial dancing of ladies at Mt Liebig and represents their body painting designs. She also paints the story given to her by her grandfater of "Kalipinpa", the Water Dreaming, which comes from her mother's side. Mavis has raised 5 children as her own. Mavis has held a number of exhibitions since 2004 in Alice Springs, Sydney and Melbourne. One of her paintings was recently chosen for the 2006 Jukurrpa diary.
