Tjunkiya Napaltjarri

Tjunkiya Napaltjarri was born at Rapalangya, north-west of the Kintore Community, circa 1930. She was the 3rd wife of Turkey Tolson's father. She later moved to Haasts Bluff with her husband and then to the Papunya Community when it was established. She participated in the Kintore/Haasts Bluff joint project which was the beginning of her career, but later painted solely for Papunya Tula. In 1999, Tjunkuya contributed to the Kintore women's painting as part of the Western Desert Dialysis Appeal. Tjunkiya Napaltjarri passed away 18 April 2009 in Alice Springs.

Tjunkiya Napaltjarri held her 3rd solo exhibition in 2008. She told how painting made her feel happy, strong and young again. She explained how she developped her own technique of painting, using 2 sticks, pushing and scratching the colour on.

Her artwork is held in a number of collections, museums across Australia and in the Netherlands.

Troisième épouse du père de Turkey Tolson, Tjunkiya Napaltjarri est née vers 1930 à Rapalangya, au nord-ouest de la communauté Kintore, pays qu'elle a quitté avec son mari pour Haasts Bluff. Puis, une fois créée la communauté Papunya, ils s'y sont installés; Le début de sa carrière date du projet Kintore-Haasts Bluff auquel elle a partcipé. Par la suite, elle a peint exclusivement pour Papunya Tula Artistes. Puis, en 1999, Tjunkiya Napaltjarri contribua aux oeuvres des femmes Kintore lors de l'appel en faveur de la dialyse.

En 2008, elle avait monté sa troisième exposition en solo. Elle raconta combien le fait de peindre la rendait heureuse - elle se sentait forte et avait l'impression d"avoir retrouvé une deuxième jeunesse. Elle expliqua comment elle avait développé sa propre technique, étalant la couleur sur la toile et la grattant à l'aide de deux bâtons.

Tjunkiya Napaltjarri est décédée à Alice Springs le 18 avril 2009.>
